How to Choose the Right Competitors for Digital Benchmarking

CLIXERA compares you with the competitors you choose. This guide explains how to pick a set that reflects your real market. 7 min read · Updated 2026-05-01

The competitor set is the analysis

CLIXERA compares your business with the competitors you choose. That is a feature, not a shortcut. A poor set produces a confident-looking gap that does not match how customers actually decide. Digital benchmarking is only as honest as the businesses you put beside your own.

Choose who customers compare you with

Start from the buying moment. Who else would a customer call, visit or ask an AI system about for the same job in the same area? Useful competitors usually: • Offer overlapping services • Serve the same geography or a realistic overlapping market • Are in a similar consideration set (not a global brand you will never displace, and not an unrelated business that happens to rank for one word) For multi-location businesses, the set can change by location. A Kanata competitor list should not be copied blindly onto a downtown location.

Avoid vanity and softness

Vanity competitors make you look behind forever. Soft competitors make you look ahead without teaching you anything. Both waste Growth Hub time. If you are unsure, pick a small set you would be comfortable defending in a meeting: “These are the businesses our customers also consider.” You can revise the set later. Re-testing against the same set is what makes progress visible; changing the set every week makes the gap unreadable.

What CLIXERA then compares

Once the set is chosen, CLIXERA looks at publicly observable digital signals — including search, local visibility, reviews, website performance and AI-assisted discovery — and shows where you lead, where you trail and what to work on first. It does not access competitor private analytics. Your job is to pick a fair market. CLIXERA's job is to put your presence in that context and help you act.
